Disability Living Allowance (DLA) refers to a tax-free benefit meant for the disabled adults and children in the UK. It caters for the extra costs these groups may have due to disability. Before you call
Dialling the Disability Living Allowance and Attendance Allowance helpline will connect you to a representative of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Calls cost no more than 7p / min plus operator’s access charge. Your call will be answered between the hours of 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. Keypad options will be as follows:
- To request a new claim pack
- If you wish to speak on behalf of someone aged under 16
- If your call is regarding a person aged between 16 – 64
- If the person you wish to speak about is aged over 65
Pressing 0 will enable you to discuss the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) benefit with one of the experienced team members.
Who is eligible?
The different categories of people who are encouraged to dial the DLA Contact Number include:
- Those with a mental or physical disability or both.
- Those with severe disability and require extra help in taking care of themselves or have walking difficulties.
- Those who claim for help when still under 65 years of age.
What are the benefits of Disability Living Allowance?
The amount of DLA you receive is not affected by any income or savings you have. As a result, it is provided to all groups of individuals regardless of whether you work or not. Adults and children benefiting from the program get help in handling common things like eating, washing, toilet usage, dressing or communicating their needs. They are also supervised to protect them against endangering themselves or other people around them. Patients on dialysis treatment can also get someone to help them along.
Once your DLA claim is successful, you can benefit from extra cash with:

How to claim
Those who meet the eligibility criteria are encouraged to call the DLA telephone number and claim immediately. A delay in claiming for help can result in total loss of the targeted benefits. There several ways to get a claim pack. They include:

- Calling the Benefit Enquiry helpline.
- Contacting the local social security.
- Download a claims form from the main DLA website.
For children under the age of 16 there is a form to download to claim DLA. A claim is made by printing and filling in the claim form. After filling the form, it can either be posted directly to the Disability and Carer’s Service or handed in to your nearest Jobcentre Plus branch. Normally, a new claim is dealt with within 37 working days. However, a claim under the special rules is dealt with much more quickly.
After the recent change, an adult who has not yet claimed for DLA must now make a new claim for PIP (Personal Independence Payment). Adults already in receipt of the disability welfare payment should call the number for any enquiries or changes to their existing claim.
There are three different rates available depending on the effect of disability. They include lowest, middle and highest rate.
- Those on the lowest rate will receive £21.00 weekly. This band is meant for people who require help for some part of the day. Normally, help offered under this rate includes having a cooked meal prepared.
- The middle rate is a payment of £53.00 weekly and is meant for people who require frequent care or supervision throughout the day. It also includes night care and help for those on dialysis.
- The highest rate is a benefit of £79.15 weekly and is meant for those people who require frequent supervision during the day and night.

How to appeal a decision
Those who think a decision made about their benefit claim is wrong or unfair, have an opportunity to seek an explanation from the Disability and Carers Services.
